The Elk Rut

Every fall, the amazing elk that share the redwoods with us go through mating season – a period of time known as the rut. During the elk rut, mature male elk compete for the females’ attention by antler wrestling one another and creating loud, bellowing vocalizations — known as “bugling.” To see a slideshow of the elk rut, click button below.

It has been very exciting lately at the Elk Meadow Cabins! Besides the gorgeous weather, our mother Roosevelt Elk have been giving birth to many fresh baby calves!

Please enjoy this video of Mother Roosevelt Elk leading two young calves to the rest of the herd.

Have you ever heard them call out to their young before like this?

Remember they can be defensive with young around, and we must respect their space.

Redwood sorrel, Oxalis oregana, is one of our favorite species here. A perspective not often seen, the bottom of these tiny under story plants that thrive in our Old-Growth Redwoods.

Seeing the beautiful heart shaped purple undersides reminds us to slow down a bit, and take a moment to appreciate the beauty that always surrounds us.

"I can't even begin to explain how much we enjoyed staying at your cabin! When we saw the beauty of the woods, and the charming cabin, it just felt like a deep, relaxing, breath!

Your cabin was immaculately clean, with everything we needed. It's obvious that a lot of thought and love went into those cabins. What a jewel! I can't wait to make my way back someday. Thanks again!"
